Watchable comedy with the odd good moment, though it’s disappointingly low on laughs.

What’s it all about?
When the editors of Confetti Magazine (Jimmy Carr and Felicity Montagu) launch a competition for the Most Original Wedding, the entrants are quickly whittled down to three couples: sweet-natured Matt and Sam (Martin The Office Freeman and Jessica Spaced Stevenson), who want to stage an elaborate Busby Berkeley-style musical wedding; naturists Michael and Joanna (Robert Webb and Olivia Coleman, both from Peep Show), who want to get married in the nude; and fiercely competitive Josef and Isabelle (Stephen Mangan and Meredith MacNeill), who’ve gone for an elaborate tennis theme.

The Good
Confetti is a pretty decent attempt to do a British version of a Christopher Guest-style mockumentary. The characters are well-drawn and superbly acted by the ensemble cast - Webb and Coleman prove particularly good sports by spending almost the entire film naked – and not in a good way.

There are a number of good scenes, most of which involve Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins as a pair of gay wedding planners. There are also valiant scene-stealing attempts by Alison Steadman and Sarah Hadland as Sam’s mother and a cruise ship entertainer sister respectively.

The Bad
The main problem is that the film just isn’t funny enough - the ingredients are all there but somehow it fails to come together properly. One reason for this is that the film-makers are too attached to the romcom side of the story - they get bogged down in trying to deliver a happy ending rather than allowing the behaviour of the characters to become ever more outrageous.

In addition, the competition sequences are poorly directed, robbing the film of the satisfying climax it deserves.

Worth seeing?
In short, Confetti is never less than watchable, thanks to its likeable characters and talented cast, but it’s neither as funny nor as clever as it thinks it is.
